On the race track: Audi RS5 vs Mercedes C63 AMG

The Fifth Gear fits two of the most potent performance coupes in the market today, the Audi RS5 and the Mercedes-Benz C63. Which will be faster? Read. Watch. And see.

First you have to take into consideration that the asphalt was damp and the Audi has a four wheel drive configuration, so you pretty much know what happens during the track test. We cannot discount though that the Mercedes has a nice aerodynamic setup. The Audi might be superb in terms of performance but the C63 brings a lot of fun in the game.

The Audi RS5 has a tag price of around £59,000 with 444 bhp coming from its naturally aspirated 4.2L V8 engine. The engine can really rev up to around 8,300 on the red line as long as you can keep the oil temperature in control but the set up limits the rev to 6,000 rpm to protect the V8.

The power of the RS5 engine is transferred to to the real deal with the 7-speed S Tronic dual clutch gearbox. The RS5 makes sure that shifting gears will not have any hints of hesitation. The sound coming off the twin exhaust pipes are uberly sweet to the ears. The Audi RS5 is on an all wheel drive configuration and makes use a pseudo-torque vectoring system which makes sure you can handle the steering without any sweat. There is also Audi Drive Select that controls the suspension, transmission, throttle, sport differential response, and steering of the car.

The Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe has 451 bhp with a sticker price of £57,000. This coupe has a rear wheel drive setup and a bigger V8 6.2L powerplant with a monstrous torque of 443 lb-ft. The grunt of the engine is definitely there with a top speed pegged at around 174 mph.

The C63 AMG has an updated gearbox which has launch control helping the car blast from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds and can easily cross the quarter mile mark in a matter of 12.1 seconds.

The Merc coupe also benefits from the chassis tweaks it received in the assembly line. It has a retuned bushings, shocks, and springs. The improved transmission also guarantees quick shifting.
